Senior Section Captain’s Day

The Woodbridge Park Seniors Section assembled for the annual Captains Day competition which comprised of a 9 hole individual stableford, Team Bowmaker, Nearest the Pin and Strongest Player formats.

33 golfers played in the competition which has become an intense and hard fought battle of mickey taking comments, banter and some surprisingly good golf, which seems to be ‘par for the course’ for a gathering of the Seniors.

Despite some serious aspirations to win, the competition was a closely fought tussle where golfers were playing for the prestigious Captains Cup, individual and a team prizes.

The day was blessed  with the course looking better than ever and the best weather of the season so far, reasonably cool at the start then the temperature soared to an impressive 16 degrees.

When the competition ended the players retired to the clubhouse for some well earned refreshments followed by an excellent lunch and presentation of prizes.

The winners then received their prizes along with some carefully selected words of encouragement from the Seniors Captain and our resident score-master David Langley-Hobbs.

This was our first Seniors Captains Cup under the new clubhouse management team. Trevor, Lynn, Cheryl and Fiona did an exceptional job to ensure that all the arrangements for the refreshments and lunch were in place.

The seniors enjoyed a superb lunch of home-made Lasagne followed by a classic Tiramisu and organised the upstairs function room to it’s maximum capacity.

The competition winners were:

Overall Captains Cup

  1. Winner – Chris Riley
  2. Second Place – John Banks
  3. Third Place – Don Saunders

Team Bowmaker

  • Chris Riley
  • John Mac
  • Gerry Bishop
  •  Nearest the Pin - John Miller
  • Strongest Player – Mike Hicks

As the Seniors Captain it was my pleasure (yes pleasure and a somewhat lighter wallet) to have provided the prizes for the day and thanks to Dave Fereday I even paid for my own lunch!!! A big thanks to Bryan (David Bailey) Moore for the photos.

Many thanks John

Seniors Presentation Day

Once again, we were blessed with a dry morning to play the first 11 holes of the course.

Mike Bacon and his staff, once again, have done a remarkable job in keeping the course playable and the greens in tip top condition. Ceri was on holiday, so Ross stepped in to ensure that all the seniors got their sausage and mash – some even got seconds!

The best score was recorded by Paul Tanner who is an’Associate Senior’ – ie. not old enough to join, but as we enjoy his company, and he seems to enjoy ours, is allowed to play but not to claim a prize, except in our weekly roll ups. He did, however, contribute to the winning teams performance, and was rewarded with a bottle of wine.

The team competition was in a Bowmaker format and the winning team consisted of Paul Tanner, John Miller and Dave Beynon.

Paul we all know can play good golf, John Miller has suddenly rediscovered the form of his youth and Dave Beynon has decided that he should show everyone that he can play – at last!

“Both John and Dave have been rewarded with handicap reductions this month just in time for the Winter Eclectic”.

The individual competition was scored on a Stableford points basis, and was won by Dave Beynon with 23 points, second place on countback was Mike Hillier with 22 points closely pursued by John Miller also with 22 points.

Scary thought is that Mike Hillier will qualify to play from the ladies’ tees next year ( a silly Seniors rule) – in your dreams Mike, it’s not going to happen!

Nearest the pin on the 8th hole was won by Bryan Moore and this wrapped up the day.

Thanks to everyone for a great day of Golf
